Shipton under Wychwood
Towns & Villages

Heart of the Oxfordshire Cotswolds and still a place of mystery, the area was once the ancient Royal Hunting Forest of Wychwood, much of which survives. Shipton is the largest of the Wychwoods (the others are Ascott and Milton), each having their own considerable attractions. Shipton has a wide village green, railway station and access to the Oxfordshire Way long-distance footpath.
On the village green there is an obelisk, a tragic memorial to 17 parishioners who set out to emigrate to New Zealand in 1874 but perished (along with 470 fellow passengers) when the ship they were travelling on caught fire and sank in the South Atlantic.
As well as downloadable public transport leaflet (pdf 209k) showing local bus services and giving the phone numbers of local taxis.
There are two downloadable cycle rides passing through the village:
Burford-Stow on the Wold (pdf 159k)
Witney-Bourton on the Water (pdf 209k)
