South Leigh lies 2½ miles (4 km) south east of Witney and 8 miles (13 km) west of Oxford. It was first mentioned in the late 12th century, by which time it had its own church - St James The Great. The earliest parts are late 12th century and part of the east wall retains its medieval wall paintings. The east window of the chancel, given c1872, depicts John the Baptist, an allusion to John Wesley who preached his first sermon in the church, in September 1725, 14 years before his Methodist Movement began.
In 1771 John Wesley returned to preach at South Leigh, traditionally in the house of a man named Winter who had heard Wesley's first sermon in the church some 46 years earlier.
Dylan Thomas, the poet, lived in South Leigh Manor from 1947 to 1949.
