Water fountain

Spelsbury is a small village on the road between Chipping Norton and Charlbury. By the side of the road there is a large canopied water fountain, of honey coloured stone, built in memory of Constantine Augustus Dillon.

Many of the eminent residents of Ditchley Park, which also served as a weekend retreat for Winston Churchill during the early years of the Second World War, are buried in the church at Spelsbury. The memorials include one to John Wilmot, 2nd Earl of Rochester, friend of Charles II and famous for his libertine lifestyle and bawdy verses. Perhaps the most interesting though is the tomb of Sir Henry Lee, who married the daughter of Charles II and Lady Castlemaine when he and his bride were only 15 and 13 respectively. In spite of marrying so young they were happily married for 40 years and had 18 children! Sir Henry was an ancestor of the General Robert E Lee, who commanded the Confederate army during the American Civil War.
