Charlbury Museum is an independent museum, run entirely by volunteers. Its five rooms are crammed with exhibits revealing the history of this ancient market town. There is plenty here to interest both adults and children.
The contents include: blacksmith’s forge; glove-making tools; penny-farthing bicycle; watchmaker’s tools; helmets and gasmasks; Victorian costumes; old shop and inn signs; farm tools.
There is a large collection of photographs of Charlbury, and its people at work and play in years gone by. There are also some records of births and deaths, if you are researching your family tree.
This year there is a special exhibition on Charlbury's sports clubs (which all began in the late nineteenth century). There will also been a special display presenting the life and works of popular local author Bessie Marchant who lived in Gothic House in Church street and wrote adventure books for girls at a time when women were still very much restricted to the home (post WW1). The museum has a large collection of her books, which will be on display along with Bessie's story.
