The Wilkinson Brothers by Miriam James

In the fifty years between 1825 and 1875, two public buildings were built in Bampton: they were a Town Hall and a National School.   They were both built by public subscription, so evidently the people of the town felt that they were important enough to be worth funding; and they were both designed by men named Wilkinson, the sons of a carpenter and builder in Witney.

The Town Hall, which stands in the centre of the Market Square, was designed in 1838 by George Wilkinson, who was better known for drawing up the plans for Workhouses, and who went on to become chief designer of Workhouses in Ireland; while the National School was designed by his younger brother William, who had already designed a church for the neighbouring parish of Lew, and who drew up the plans for the National School which opened in Church Street in 1870, replacing the outgrown school which stood to the south of the Market Square. William Wilkinson also designed several other schools and public buildings in Oxfordshire, as well as the Norham Manor Estate in North Oxford; his best-known building is perhaps the Randolph Hotel, in Broad Street, Oxford.
